Magnesium and Mental Health

Have you heard of magnesium?

This mineral packs a sweet but powerful punch, especially if you are deficient. Mineral deficiencies are extremelyyyy common due to the depletion of our soil, treatment of our water supply and overall consumption of processed food. Let’s get it straight - we NEED minerals to survive and flourish. Minerals are required to support many vital cellular processes and reactions. Magnesium alone has been shown to facilitate over 300 different chemical reactions in the body and is needed to make energy, neurotransmitters and hormones. It is a supplement that I recommend nearly across the board for my patients - it’s just THAT good.

Let’s talk mental health

Magnesium is needed to create dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin. Magnesium binds to the NMDA-receptor in the nervous system to create a calming effect while protecting precious neurons from damage. It’s like a natural chill pill that can act directly on the stress-hormone axis to regulate the stress response and support the adrenal glands.

Supplementation has been shown to decrease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and seizures! It is safe to use in children and is helpful in ADD/ADHD. It is my go to supplement to take when traveling to help with sleep and travel tension.
